What people heard when he said If you Like Your Plan You can Keep your Plan

“If you like your plan, you can keep your plan,” so said our President in perhaps his most infamous sales pitch of his Presidency.

So what did this mean? and what did the American people hear when he said it?

I can tell you what they did not hear.

They did NOT hear, or believe, that the president was saying that they could keep their plan ONLY if they kept the EXACT plan that was in place prior to the passage of Obamacare on March 23, 2010.

They did NOT hear or believe that he was saying that they could keep their plan ONLY IF they had a plan prior to March 23, 2010, AND that plan only changed in a very minor way.

Nobody thought that Presidential Promise would lead to hair-splitting, legal ease and legalism.

What they heard….

They heard “for those of you who have plans that you pay for, or one that is paid for by your employer…..you can keep it, and there is nothing that you need to worry about.”

They heard “if you don’t want to be a part of Obamacare, you don’t have to be a part….so don’t worry about it”

They heard “if you have a plan, or you get a plan, and you don’t want Obamacare, you won’t be harmed…so don’t worry about it.”

They heard “if you are not experiencing a health care crisis, if you are covered, you don’t need to pay any attention to the debate, because it does not matter to you…..so don’t worry about it.
